Objectives, functions and tasks of the Social Cohesion Committee
Scope of responsibility:
The Citizenship, Migration and Social Cohesion Committee conducts parliamentary scrutiny over the areas that were under the responsibility of the Social Cohesion Committee in the 11th Saeima (October 2011 – November 2014):
- Inter-ethnic social cohesion (integration);
- Strengthening ties with the Latvian diaspora;
- Parliamentary scrutiny over the implementation of the Citizenship Law;
- Granting Latvian citizenship for meritorious service rendered to Latvia.
In the new convocation, the Committee began working on 7 November 2014 under an expanded title – the Citizenship, Migration and Social Cohesion Committee – thus assuming more responsibilities.
- Scrutiny of immigration and emigration issues.
The Committee conducts parliamentary scrutiny over the areas within its scope of responsibility. The Committee is not a legislative committee and does not participate in drafting legislation as a responsible committee. However, regarding some legislative issues, it can be designated as a co-responsible committee and issue opinions for the use of legislative committees.
